The Penacova Mills preserve the rural tradition and identity of the region, surrounded by unique natural landscapes over the Mondego valley.
Between valleys and hills, the municipality of Penacova preserves one of the largest groups of traditional mills in the country. There are 19 windmills and 18 watermills that still stand today, some still in operation and others ready to be used. They are spread across the areas of Atalhada, Aveleira e Roxo, Gavinhos, Paradela de Lorvão, and Portela da Oliveira. Along the Mondego and Alva rivers, and the many streams that cross the territory, these structures recall the ingenuity with which nature was once harnessed. Wind and water transformed grain into flour, and Penacova still keeps this memory alive.
