History, legends and life in the mountains.
Folgosinho, in the municipality of Gouveia, is one of the most beautiful villages in Serra da Estrela. Its heritage and legends stretch from Viriatus to King Afonso Henriques, preserving a past that can still be felt in its stones and pathways. Here, it is still possible to see flocks heading to pasture and women collecting water from the village fountains, built in stone and decorated with tiles bearing verses about the village’s water, one of the local attractions. The pillory, the parish church and the castle, rebuilt in the 20th century on medieval remains, complete the setting. Beneath the castle, traces of a Lusitanian hillfort remind visitors that Folgosinho is deeply connected to the history of the Lusitanians and to Viriatus. Among the several places that claim to be the birthplace of the legendary hero, Folgosinho proudly keeps the tradition alive, with a house at the entrance of the village said to have been his home.
