Colours and stories of the mountain.
The Chapel of São Lourenço has watched over this mountain for more than half a century, guarding stories and legends well known to the shepherds of Serra da Estrela and the people of Manteigas, forming part of the daily life that unfolds in this region. On the mountainside lies what is believed to be the largest beech forest in the Iberian Peninsula. A landscape that changes with the seasons, but it is in autumn that it becomes truly magical: the leaves of the beeches, oaks and chestnut trees turn golden, creating a unique setting. In spring and summer, vibrant green takes over, offering a different yet equally magnificent beauty. For those wishing to discover this natural treasure, the Beech Route trail is especially recommended in November, when the colours are at their peak. The route is approximately 5.5 km long and begins near Cruz das Jugadas. Simply follow the EN 232 from the town of Manteigas towards Penhas Douradas, turn at the junction for Covão da Ponte and continue until you reach the sign marked “PR13 – Beech Route”. With every step, the trail reveals new surprises among lush vegetation and breathtaking landscapes, making the experience truly unforgettable.
